
Jazmine Sullivan is a native of and brought up at home in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Pam, her mother is an ex-backup singer at Philadelphia International Records. When she was five years old, older, her father was offered job as curator at City's Historic Strawberry Mansion in the Strawberry Mansion section, and her family moved into the historical landmark. In 2005, she graduated from the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts in the class of singer-music major. Sullivan started singing as a contralto with the children's choir, then a few years later in the adult group. Sullivan's exposure to secular music was not extensive at first "I performed solo at churches and a person wanted me to go on a gospel label when I was eleven but I wasn't ready to do that," she recalls. "Then when McDonald's was hosting a competition for youngsters in the major cities and I was offered the chance to perform 'Accept what God Does' on Showtime at the Apollo and the audience loved it". She sang with Stevie Wonder at his grandson's birthday in the year 13. Sullivan was first signed to Jive Records at the age 15. There, she recorded an entire album, but the album wasn't released. Sullivan was later dropped from the record label. Her work had been in good partnership with Missy Elliott. Elliott produced several of her songs which included "Backstabbers", which was produced by Timbaland.
